Women in Business

March marks Women’s History Month and the end of Q1. This month, we’re focusing on celebrating women and how we can support one another in business. As we embark on this new month filled with opportunities and challenges, we're excited to share some tips and strategies that have helped us in our business journey.

Behind every great woman… is another great woman

🫶🏽 Build a Strong Network

There’s no doubt about it, the barriers to entry for women in business are still alive and well. Women are still 63% less likely to receive VC funding and earn between 22-30% less than our male counterparts for the same role. The world of entrepreneurship is a bumpy one, which means it is crucial to find a network of like-minded women to support you. We suggest joining our Facebook group, attending networking events and following women in business pages on socials. Surrounding yourself with a supportive community of mentors, peers, and allies can provide invaluable support, guidance, and opportunities for collaboration.

👭 Step Up Exactly As You Are!

As women in business, it can be hard to find your voice and learn how to balance assertiveness with being your authentic self when working with clients. We can often find ourselves shrinking to fit the societal depiction of the female role. Which often leaves us feeling powerless. It’s time to kick that playbook to the curb. Take the time to learn how you want to show up in your work so that you can stand confidently next to your male counterparts. As a woman in business, you bring a valuable and distinct perspective to the table. Embrace your uniqueness and use it to your advantage. Your diverse experiences and insights can be a powerful asset in decision-making and problem-solving. Whenever we are feeling less than we like to practise the following affirmations: I am talented, I am aware, I am informed, I am worthy and I know what I am here to do. Don’t hesitate to advocate for yourself, whether it’s negotiating a raise, expressing ideas in a meeting or seeking new opportunities. You deserve to be here and any company is lucky to have your input.

💋 Take Care of Yourself

Business is draining enough without the subtle microaggressions that we can come up against as women in the space.  Balancing the demands of work, personal life and raising children can be challenging, to say the least, but it's essential to prioritize some form of self-care. Make time for activities that nourish your mind, body, and soul, whether it's practising mindfulness for five minutes, exercising, or spending quality time with loved ones. Remember, it’s crucial for your career longevity to make time for small activities that bring you joy. As women, we often don’t take the time to celebrate ourselves. So no matter how big or small, recognize your achievements and use them to boost your confidence to reach greater heights. Finally, as you progress in your career, remember to pay it forward by supporting and mentoring other women in business. Share your knowledge, experiences, and insights to empower the next generation of female leaders.

Our fellow Freelancing Females, you are capable of achieving incredible things, and your journey in business is a testament to your resilience, determination, and ingenuity. Keep pushing boundaries, breaking barriers, and paving the way for a brighter, more inclusive future.
