Spilling the Sales Tea

There’s no doubt that hunting for new clients can be the most annoying and anxiety-inducing part of freelancing. This led us to think about how we can alleviate some of this biz stress and create solutions to our most annoying problem. This raised a few questions we’re answering today - how do we keep the clients we have? How do we upsell so we can keep the cash flowing into our business? Let’s get into it.

You can never leave footprints that last if you are always walking on tiptoe.

🤝 We’re in it for the long haul

To ensure long-term success in your biz, it’s crucial to foster strong relationships with your clients. I mean duh right?! It seems like an obvious tip, however, we can let people slip through the cracks - here’s how to stop letting them.  Our clients want to feel really good about their investment - you. To make them feel this way we like to go above and beyond to make them not only feel great about ROI but also so they’re left raving about us to their friends. There are a bunch of ways you can foster a strong relationship, but let’s run through a few of our faves. Providing regular communication and personalized service can make a big difference. Make it a point to check in with clients even when you’re not actively working on a project for them. Send periodic updates, share relevant industry news, or simply ask how their business is doing. By demonstrating genuine interest in their success, you build trust and increase the likelihood of repeat business.

💸 It shouldn’t give you the ick

Upselling isn’t just about increasing revenue; it’s about enhancing the value you provide to your clients. As soon as I had this wonderful mindset switch, it stopped that awful sales ick from coursing through my entire body every time I spoke to someone. Start by identifying complementary services that align with their needs and goals. For example, if you’re a web designer, offering ongoing maintenance or SEO services can be a natural extension of your work. When presenting these options, focus on how they address specific challenges or enhance the results of your initial project. Tailoring your upsell proposals to address their unique needs will make them more compelling and relevant. Remember if you’ve delivered a great customer service experience, most clients would love to keep working with you as it saves the risk of hiring a brand new person and you will be able to save them precious time.

🫶🏽 Retainer clients - a freelancers bestie

Oh retainer clients - we love you! You help us forecast our income easier, you keep the lights on and you’re just a great client to have around (most of the time). So, how do we keep our gain retainer clients?! Well, consistent quality is key to retaining clients and encouraging upsells. Make sure that every deliverable meets or exceeds expectations and that your work aligns with the agreed-upon scope and objectives. Set clear timelines, stick to them, and be proactive in addressing any issues or feedback. By maintaining high standards and reliability, you not only satisfy your current clients but also position yourself as a trusted expert, making them more likely to consider additional services you offer in the future.

Diary of a CEO

I know I know, ANOTHER podcast to add to your list. Hear me out. This podcast is a fantastic resource for business owners, it tells so many people’s stories in a very real way. The good, the bad and the ugly. It’s one of my faves as it shows the realistic side of business instead of the glorified IG version. I love to use the pod for case studies of how I can improve my business operations, marketing strategy etc. A must-listen on your next HGW!

Skinsuit

I have been trying my best to use better products for my skin and the planet. This led me on a wild goose chase to find legit reef-safe sunscreen. This mineral sunscreen is perfect for your face as it’s 50spf and doesn’t feel gross to put on. It’s also cruelty-free - yay!

Harvest Snaps

I feel like we all go through snacking phases and fixations. Mine at the moment is Harvest Snaps - they’re addictive and SO delicious. I love their Mango lime flavor the best, but will sometimes go for the 5 pack of flavors if I’m feeling like pushing the boat out. They’re the perfect product to mindlessly snack on when you’re hitting that 2 pm slump.
