FFN #77 Networking without the Ick

Networking doesn’t have to feel awkward - here’s how to create genuine connections.

Your inbox just got freelance-friendly. Jobs, resources, and hot takes—straight from the world’s largest community of women working for themselves. We’re here to make freelancing easier, smarter, and way more fun.

Don’t wait for the right opportunity: create it.

FOCUS ON CONNECTION - NOT THE SALE

Instead of leading with a pitch, start by getting to know the person. Ask about their business goals, upcoming projects, or even their latest win. Genuine curiosity builds trust and makes the conversation feel less like a sales pitch and more like a real relationship. When you focus on connecting first, the work opportunities naturally follow.

GIVE BEFORE YOU ASK

Want to stand out? Offer value before you ask for anything. Share a helpful resource, make an introduction, or give a quick piece of advice. Being generous shows you’re invested in their success—not just your own. When you position yourself as a helpful expert, you’ll be the first person they think of when they need help.

STAY IN TOUCH (WITHOUT BEING ANNOYING)

Great relationships aren’t built overnight—they’re nurtured over time. Follow up with a quick check-in, send a congratulatory note when they hit a milestone, or share content they might find useful. Thoughtful, periodic touch points keep you top of mind without feeling pushy or salesy.

Networking doesn’t have to be cringe—it’s just about being human. Start building real relationships, and the opportunities will follow. Each month we have networking chats in our Slack for FF members - don’t forget to join the next rounds.

HEARD IT IN THE DMS

How we fight the feast and famine cycle!

Set aside 20% of every payment you receive for your "off season." Building a financial cushion allows you to smooth out the gaps between projects and gives you peace of mind, so you’re not stressing when things slow down. The key? Consistency—no matter how big or small the project.
