Striking a Balance

Hello to our wonderful community!

A recent post on our Facebook group garnered a massive 7k reach, and we found the topic to be incredibly relevant. Navigating social media can be a double-edged sword. On one hand, it's an essential tool for many professionals, especially those in PR, marketing, and content creation but let’s face it, many of us need it for our businesses no matter the job description. Yet, for many, it triggers anxiety, and overwhelm. It's easy to lose hours scrolling, comparing, and becoming lost in a whirlwind of trends and updates. However, some have found ways to strike a balance:

  • Mindful Curation: Many advocate for being discerning about who you follow, suggesting a hard curation of your feed and limiting it to essential contacts and beneficial groups.

  • Delegation: If you can, delegate social media tasks. Outsourcing can mean you spend less time immersed in the platform and avoid burnout.

  • Boundaries: Create separate profiles for personal and work use or set time limits on usage. Turn off notifications or even delete apps from your phone for periods of time.

  • Alternative Platforms: Some find solace in less 'social' platforms like Pinterest or focus on evergreen content like SEO.

  • Reflection: Question why certain content triggers negative emotions and consider muting, unfollowing, or blocking sources of distress.

  • Digital Detoxes: Regular breaks from social media or "posting and ghosting" can provide respite.

  • Purposeful Usage: Shift the perspective. Use social media with a specific purpose, such as research or business promotions, rather than aimless scrolling.

The consensus is clear: while social media is an integral part of many professions, setting boundaries and being intentional about its use can help preserve one's mental health and well-being. How do you find balance?

In today’s rush, we all think too much - seek too much - and forget about the joy of just being.

🤸 For The Love Of Flexibility

Work for people who understand the difference between a contract worker and W-2 employee. As a “contract”, “freelance” or 1099 worker (whichever way it’s phrased) you aren’t required to work within specific hours or to be available/on-call from 8-5 every day. Unless it’s written in your contract, you have the rights to your own schedule and the flexibility that allows. You are not a full time employee with benefits and you don’t have to act like you are. Have questions about the differences or how to deal with “horrible bosses”? Submit a question to our podcast and we’ll answer it on air!

💻 The Power Of Networking

Embracing the art of networking is crucial for freelancers, especially for those new to the industry. The Pareto Principle suggests that strong relationships with merely 20% of one's clients can generate an impressive 80% of new work through referrals. New freelancers can bolster their networks by engaging in industry webinars, attending related events, joining online groups like Freelancing Females on Facebook, and refining their LinkedIn profiles. Personally, when I initiated my freelancing venture, connecting with friends, family, and community members led to numerous opportunities. Always remember: you never know who might need your services.

“No Worries if Not” by Billie

Billie, the renowned body care brand, introduces "No Worries If Not," a satirical board game that magnifies the contradictory expectations women grapple with in a patriarchal society. Drawing inspiration from classics like The Game of Life, this colorful and engaging game highlights real challenges faced by women, such as The Wage Gap and Fertility Forest. While it's designed with an entertaining flair, the underlying message is powerful: the societal game women navigate daily often feels rigged and near impossible to win.
