FFN #90 How to Find Better Clients

Free workshop inside!

So my 'turn-off' ritual is to tidy my desk - everything away, pens in the pen mug, un-filed bits of paper back in the filing tray, notebooks and folders back in the shelf and laptop closed! Then if I need to, a quick tidy up of the room as well, since my office is also my bedroom and living area :).

Karleen - FF Tips for ‘Switching Off’

Hey bestie,

Let’s talk about that one client who texts at 9pm, expects 48-hour turnarounds, and pays you late every time. 😮‍💨
Yeah… we’re not doing that anymore.

This is your ✨reminder✨ that freelancing isn't about saying yes to everyone with a pulse and a budget. You deserve dream clients—ones who respect your time, trust your skills, and pay on time without chasing. Period.

So, how do you actually find them? Let’s break it down:

🧲 Start Attracting, Not Just Applying

You’re not a vending machine, you’re a whole brand. So let’s act like it.
Instead of scrambling for scraps on job boards, build a magnetic online presence that screams: I know what I’m doing AND I have boundaries.

✨ Post your values.
✨ Talk about what kind of clients you love working with.
✨ Share what red flags you don’t tolerate.

Dream clients stalk your socials and website before they slide into your inbox. Make sure what they see reflects the kind of biz you’re running.

📄  Set Expectations Before the Work Starts

The best clients actually want to know your boundaries. They don’t want to guess when you’re available or wonder when to expect deliverables.

So tell them.
And better yet, write it down.

✨ Send a welcome guide.
✨ Use a contract that outlines response times, revision limits, and communication methods.
✨ Drop an OOO template when you’re not working.

When you show up clear, confident, and professional—you attract people who match your energy. (And repel the chaos.)

💸 Price Like a Pro

Spoiler: The clients who pay the least usually expect the most.
You don’t need 10 low-budget clients, you need 2–3 great ones who get it.

🤸🏽‍♀️ Raise your rates.
.🤸🏽‍♀️ Position yourself as an expert, not a helper.
.🤸🏽‍♀️ Stop apologising for charging your worth.

The clients who can’t afford you? Let them go with love.
The ones who stay? Chef’s kiss.

💌 Use Your Network (Seriously)

Every dreamy client I’ve ever landed came from one of three things:

  1. A referral from another freelancer

  2. Someone who’s been following me for ages

  3. A past client who couldn’t stop talking about me (iconic)

So nurture those relationships. Check in. Hype up your biz. Send that “Hey, I’ve got spots open!” message to a past client.

Sometimes the best work doesn’t come from cold pitching—it comes from community.

You don’t have to put up with chaotic clients just to “make it.”
Set the tone, show your value, and don’t be afraid to say next to anything that feels off. The right people will show up.

Protect your peace. Respect your rate. And remember:
You are not a service robot. You are a whole damn business.

You’ve got this. 💘
