FFN #92 I lost a client, here's what I'm doing next

This economy is no joke

Recently, I’ve been loving making time in the morning to read. Just 15 minutes before I jump on my laptop makes me feel more in control of my day and reminds me that I chose freelancing for the freedom. Not to be tied to my laptop.

Sara - FF Community Tips

Hey FF’s

Sara here! I almost felt a bit too embarrassed to share what I am about to write with you but then I thought, hey what if someone else is going through the same thing?

A few weeks ago I lost a client out of the blue and it totally rocked my confidence.

Not because I haven’t gone through client break ups before, because as a freelancer - that’s inevitable. But because I didn’t see it coming at all. Which naturally (if you’re a people pleaser like me) led me to spiral down the what did I do wrong rabbit hole.

So if you have recently lost a client or just going through it trying to get clients through the door - I hear you. This economy is the wild west and getting clients is rough. But I wanted to share a few things I’m doing to turn it around and attract new clients to my business.

✨ Don’t sleep on LinkedIn Hashtags

Okay, I will never gate keep! One thing that has helped me find heaps of projects to pitch on has been following the LinkedIn hashtag #freelanceopportunities or #freelance. There are SO many people looking for random little one off projects all the way to year long contracts and they aren’t posting them as positions.

💭 Reviewing your Packages

This seems so obvious, but I didn’t realise I had totally neglected reviewing my offerings. So during this slower time, I am looking at what works, what doesn’t, where the industry is going and what I need to upskill into so I can retain clients in my biz the whole time. For example, I offer social media management, so I am upskilling more into newsletter writing and graphic design so I can offer clients more add on packages to keep them with me! Investing in courses can feel counterproductive when money is tight, but I know its an investment into my business and me for the future.

💸 I’m focusing on quick $$ injections

I saw a TikTok on this and before I lose your attention, it has been a game changer! Design a few lower ticket offerings that you can pitch to past clients or clients you have turned you down before because they don’t have budget. For example, a designer in a day or a social media audit! Or even consulting hours, these quick cash injections can be so helpful to bring money back into your biz or just to grab some groceries for the week!

💖 A few extra’s things I am doing
  • Showing up on social media for my own page

  • Tidying up my website and portfolio - including results I get my clients!

  • Researching passive income streams for my business

  • Tightening up my budget

  • Pitching new industries

Listen, for anyone else going through it this year, I hear you. It’s been rough to say the least but my fave thing to remember is tough times don’t last, tough people do.
